Steal This Idea: Hungry Horde

I work on games all day, but the games that haunt me are the ones I’m NOT working on. Feel free to steal, learn from, and critique my ideas for new games, and hopefully someday the ghosts of games-yet-to-be-made will let me sleep peacefully at night.

Elevator Pitch

Hungry Horde is a real-time strategy game where feeding your army of mini-monsters mutates them in strategic ways.

Gameplay/Mechanics

Hungry Horde is a game in the vein of Pikmin and Overlord with a twist- empower your monstrous units, called Noms, by feeding them different meals as you play.

  • Noms
    • Build your Noms into units with different types of strengths/weaknesses.
      • Fat (def HP/insulation)
      • Carbs (run energy/attack frequency)
      • Protein (attack/lifting strength).
    • Noms change appearance based on their intake balance, ranging from muscular, to rotund, to lanky.
    • Divvy up food to create very specialized units, or balance the scales to make units better overall.
  • Food
    • Enemies you kill during your journey are used for 2 different resources- Goop and Macros.
    • Enemy corpses are brought back to your lair and ground up and used to make Goop- which is molded to make new fresh-slate monsters (think McDonald’s chicken nuggets). They are blank slates yet to be molded.
    • Harvest Macros from fallen foes to act as ingredients to make meals for your horde. Each food recipe requires 3 components to make out of Fat/Carbs/Protein.
  • Combat
    • During harder fights, when your units fall in battle, you have to regroup and harvest enemies to rebuild your army and outfit them with the right stats.
  • Puzzles
    • Puzzle components that need to be lifted require a certain number of monsters with strength stats. Cold areas can only be survived by monsters with a certain amount of insulation, hot areas kill off insulated Noms.
  • Special Upgrades
    • On your journey, unlock Utensils of Power to help you command your troops.
      • Spatula: use to flip units up and over obstacles and put them in the enemies back line.
      • Whisk: create a tornado that disrupts and scatters enemy units.
      • Pizza Cutter: creates a path through enemy lines.
      • Shrink Wrap: take a unit out of the fight and preserve them until they’ve healed enough to rejoin.
